Thinkpad Tablet 10 & Linux – Getting Closer

I am making progress in getting the device to behave. With quite some help from some nice guys at Intel Finland – thank you! – and a lot of trying and fiddling I can now report that my TPT10 seems to go to sleep and wake up again – without glitches, so far. A major improvement is the latest Linux kernel release 4.5.3 which contains a bunch of fixes for Baytrail SDIO and ACPI.

Still not working:

  • NFC – oh well, would be a nice to have; right now I am more concerned of potential power drain when the device is not properly initialised
  • Fingerprint reader – there is no driver, no datasheet and the SPI bus driver is not yet working
  • WWAN modem – not yet tested, it times out using mbimcli, maybe because I do not have a SIM inserted?
  • Sound – there is no Baytrail RT5672 board file yet, I intend to create one myself
  • Cameras – well, that’s a real pity, but I have not given up hope yet since there are drivers for other Baytrail tablets around, but this is a big bunch of ugly code
  • battery (and AC) – I do not have any battery status info and the AC adapter status is reported wrong; this is pretty important for me since I do not want to run out of juice while working mobile

Last night I ordered the dock so I will be able to test the dock devices with, primarily the Ethernet and HDMI, eventually the USB3 port with a USB3 harddisk. If the dock work seamlessly it would turn the TPT10 into a very nice workstation – just drop it in, have a bigger USB keyboard, harddisk and screen attached and off you go with all sorts of office work.
